Maryam Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, chaired the fourth meeting of the “Emirates Climate Action Council” for the year 2023, which was held via video communication, and reviewed the national efforts for climate ambition, the outcomes of the country’s hosting of the “COP28” conference, and a number of related topics.
She pointed to the success of the UAE’s hosting of the conference, through which it launched a new phase in its journey in climate action locally and globally, and said, “What the UAE achieved during the conference was a reflection of the spirit of work and cooperation between all concerned parties in the country, including the private sector, the academic and research sector, and all members of society.” . It is following the vision and directives of the wise leadership in order to create a sustainable future for future generations.”
She said, “The conference was a landmark event in the world’s efforts to confront climate change and adapt to it, with many efforts that were made for the first time, the most prominent of which was the launch of the “Historic UAE Climate Action Agreement,” which renewed the hope that global temperature rise would remain within 1.5 degrees Celsius and the planet would be protected. He was able to raise $85 billion, launching a new phase of climate action in the world. Activating the Loss and Damage Fund and collecting $800 million, to help the countries most affected by confronting and adapting to climate change, and completing 11 pledges and declarations on various areas related to climate action, which received widespread support from dozens of countries.
Maryam Al Muhairi continued, “COP28 was the best conclusion for this year, and we hope in the coming years to build on its results to strengthen the UAE’s position in global climate action, and build a leading global model for sustainability in the various targeted national sectors and achieve climate neutrality by the year 2050, and that this climate action will be “An opportunity to achieve more sustainable economic growth and prosperity for the people of the UAE.”
The meeting reviewed the achievements achieved and the latest announcements and pledges issued at the conference, including its pledge to triple the production capacity of renewable energy sources and double global energy efficiency, and its declaration on sustainable agriculture, resilient food systems and climate action.
He reviewed the developments in work on a number of national initiatives that were approved during the annual meetings of the UAE government and the Council of Ministers meeting during December 2023, including: the UAE Strategy for Climate Neutrality 2050, the long-term emissions reduction strategy report, the national registry of carbon credits, and a number of projects and initiatives under implementation, such as the system project. National Monitoring, Verification and Reporting, and the National Adaptation Program Development Project. And developments in the work of the National Climate Ambition Dialogue Initiative, the Climate Responsible Business Pledge, the Climate Ambassadors Programme, and the COP28 Frontline Employee Training Initiative.
