ABU DHABI, 19th April, 2019 (WAM) — The Emirates Autism Center is organizing the activities of Autism Week for the sixteenth year in a row, from 24 to 27 April, under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.
The activities of the Emirates Autism Center for the year 2023, which are held on the sidelines of the global events for World Autism Day, aim to establish the concept of acceptance through the new name for the international celebration of the month of April as the Month of Autism Acceptance.
This coincides with a campaign to shed light on the concept of neurodiversity for people on the autism spectrum and to respect the difference in the way they process information, away from attaching incorrect labels to them, which encourages people on the autism spectrum and their families to live a full and quality life through communication and acceptance.
The Emirates Autism Center took an initiative in this context by changing the center’s logo to a new logo that reflects the acceptance of difference and neurodiversity for people with autism in purple color and highlights three concepts: The first: brain difference between people is natural and indicates neurodiversity. The second: the importance of listening to the opinions and desires of people on the autism spectrum, which is indicated by the “Wi-Fi” sign. The third: Autism is a spectrum, which means that individuals differ greatly in their abilities across the social and cognitive domains. This is evident through the range of color gradation (from light to dark). .
And the World Health Organization stated in its latest publication in 2023 that the prevalence rate of the autism spectrum is 1:100 children, and it appears in early childhood before the age of three years.
The number of students of the Emirates Autism Center – which was established in March 2007 in Abu Dhabi – is 50 male and female students, and the percentage of them are citizens. Among the most important programs adopted by the center are community integration and vocational rehabilitation to prepare students to reach the greatest possible degree of independence and self-reliance.
