Here everything that glitters is gold: the controversial Emir of Qatar and his family celebrate a life of maximum luxury. We introduce the lifestyle of the Orient Royals.

Do you know Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani? The Emir of Qatar and his large family may not be among the most famous royals in the world, but they are certainly among the most glamorous. The head of state of the Emirate of Qatar is certainly controversial. The country’s grievances were already heavily criticized for the 2022 World Cup; The Emir in turn rejected these as “double standards”. The desert state could also play a questionable role in the currently escalating Middle East conflict, in which Qatar wants to pride itself as a mediator – it has long been considered a supporter of the Islamist Hamas. On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz received the Emir of Qatar for lunch at Meseburg Castle. GALA takes a look at the luxurious lifestyle of the dubious head of state from the desert state.

Who is the Emir of Qatar?

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, 44, was born in Qatar in 1980 as the son of the then Emir. The small desert state is one of the richest countries in the Gulf region and has been an absolute monarchy since it declared full independence from the United Kingdom in 1971. Tamim has ruled the country since 2013 and is its political and military leader.

According to current Islamic law, men in Qatar are allowed to have up to four wives at a time. The Emir himself married three women: In 2005, he married his second cousin Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, 39. As his first wife, she accompanies him on most occasions and official trips. In 2009, she married Anoud bint Mana al-Hajri, 34, and finally Noora bint Hathal ad-Dosari in 2015. The emir has so far fathered a total of 13 children with his wives.

The luxury world of the royal family

Thanks to the oil and gas wealth in the tiny desert state, Qatar is very, very rich. This can also be seen in the lifestyle of the ruling family. With an estimated fortune of an incredible 331 billion euros, the family has more money than any other monarchy. Apparently, as the “Tatler” writes, the Emir wanted to shell out four billion pounds (the equivalent of around 4.8 billion euros) for Manchester United last year – but the deal fell through. He has owned the French football club Paris Saint-Germain since 2012.

With several ultra-luxurious properties and investments in London and New York (including the Empire State Building, Harrod’s and The Shard), the royals from Qatar are in the top league of the super-rich. The listed Dudley House alone, located at 100 Park Lane in Mayfair and one of the family’s London residences, is said to be worth more than 200 million pounds (around 240 million euros). With 4,000 square feet of living space, the historic townhouse offers 17 bedrooms, a ballroom and its own art gallery. If media reports are to be believed, the British monarch Queen Elizabeth, †96, is said to have remarked during a private visit: “That makes Buckingham Palace look pretty old.” The Emir also owns two properties in Cornwall Terrace, one of the most expensive and sought-after residential areas in the metropolis with a direct view of Regent’s Park.

Close ties to the Windsors

As the British “Sun” reports, Tamim also owns the XXL mega yacht “Al Lusail” for 400 million pounds (around 480 million euros) with its own beauty salon, elevator and private cinema. Several private jets with luxurious furnishings and countless sports cars as well as limited special editions of famous cars round off the fleet. His three wives and 13 children dress in expensive luxury fashion and wear breathtaking handbags and jewelry on official occasions.

The emir is closely linked to the kingdom not only through Qatar’s historical relations with Great Britain. He completed his schooling here and attended the famous Sandhurst Military Academy. It’s no surprise that Tamim and King Charles, 75, seem to get along very well. Queen Elizabeth also often welcomed the Royal from Qatar to Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. This puts them in good company: the Macron couple, King Willem-Alexander, 57, and Queen Máxima, 53, as well as the Spanish royal couple have already received the Emir and his wife.
