On Saturday morning, the Kuwaiti state channel interrupted its regular broadcast schedule and instead broadcast verses from the Koran.
It was interpreted as a sign that a member of the royal family had died. This was later confirmed:
– We mourn with great sadness… the death of Sheikh Sheikh This is a title of honor in the Arab world. It is often used for leaders or elders in a group. Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, said in a statement from a Kuwaiti court during the telecast, according to Al Jazeera.
At the end of November, the Sheikh was rushed to hospital with an illness unknown to the public. Since then, there has been little news about the emir’s state of health, according to AP News.
Next in line of succession is Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jabar. He is 83 years old and thus by all accounts the world’s oldest crown prince.
In March 2021, the emir was for medical treatment in the United States, according to the country’s state-run media.

Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah has ruled the country for three years, since 30 September 2020, after being appointed by the country’s National Assembly.
He succeeded his late half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, after being named Crown Prince on 7 February 2006.
The late Emir al-Ahmad al-Sabah has participated in the country’s government in various positions since 1962.
Before becoming emir, al Ahmad al-Sabah had a long career within Kuwait’s government, including as minister of defense and interior.
Kuwait is located in the Middle East and has just under 4.5 million inhabitants.
