Emily Callahan’s Experience in Gaza: A Nurse’s Perspective on the Indonesian Hospital

Jakarta

A nurse from the US named Emily Callahan talked about her experience while serving at the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza. He told the sad condition of the victims and the medical personnel who tried to save them. Even though she has returned to America, Emily admits that her heart still remains in Gaza after seeing what the conditions are like there.

Emily Callahan, who joined the Doctors Without Borders organization, served in Gaza when the conflict between Israel and Hamas flared up in October. He was finally evacuated last week after being a nurse there for 26 days.

“My heart is in Gaza and will stay in Gaza. The Palestinians who work with me, our national staff in the office as well as the staff at the Indonesian Hospital are some of the greatest people I have ever met in my life,” he said in an interview with CNN. .

The woman also told how solid the medical personnel who work at the Indonesian Hospital are. When one of the nurses died because the ambulance was bombed, many colleagues did not intend to move because of their persistence.

“This is our community. This is our family. They are our friends. If they (the Israelis) want to kill us, we will die while saving as many people as we can,” he said.

“The doctors and nurses there did not leave (the hospital), because of their loyalty to the community. I want to remind people that those who stayed there were heroes. They knew they were going to die and they still chose to stay,” explained Emily.

Knowing that her co-worker might be dead, Emily said that one of their routines was to send messages to colleagues every morning and before bed. This was done to check whether his colleague was still alive. In Gaza itself so far it has been reported that at least 10,328 people have been killed, including 4,327 children and 2,719 women.
