This is one of the most cited good resolutions at the dawn of a new year: rebalance your diet. After the excesses of the holidays, it really is an opportunity to regain energy … Émilie Rouzies-Colas, dietitian nutritionist from Chartres, shares her advice.
The end-of-year celebrations are over, with their share of excesses. How to adopt a healthier diet for the year 2023?
People have taken advantage of it and it’s quite normal to have fun this time of year. Holidays aside, it is good to resume a daily lifestyle, good habits, which are lighter. Ask yourself what can I do to relieve my pancreas, my liver? You also need to understand how your body works. Above all, don’t take it as an injunction, but as a kind of therapeutic education. Telling ourselves that this year we have the freedom to take care of ourselves. With a few pounds less, we often feel much better. Excesses lead to all kinds of problems. Food really is the basis of treatments for cholesterol, diabetes, etc. In any case, it is important to take stock with a dietician.
We have the freedom to take care of ourselves this year.
Where can we start?
The body doesn’t like excesses. I have to make sure that what I eat, I spend. It’s something quite easy to set up. You should already know that the body’s fuel is sugar, so we need it. Sweet products, but also fruit, starches. You can start with a breakfast that will keep you going in the morning. For example bread, with butter, fruit and without jam. Muesli, cereal with nuts, for example, also offers a good alternative. Therefore, the sugar will rise more slowly in the blood. For lunch, I recommend starchy foods with fiber (vegetables). Even if you’re short on time to cook fresh, canned and frozen foods are good alternatives. If you don’t like vegetables you can opt for wholemeal pasta, lentils. We also associate a protein, to slow down the passage of sugar in the blood. To lose the holiday pounds, it is possible to lighten the evening meal and remove the sugar at that time. So stick to veggies and protein. Without fuel in the evening, the body will draw on its reserves.

Hydration is also important…
Yes, and besides, we sometimes confuse hunger and thirst. And we notice that those who drink a little more during the day often eat a little less.
Opting for a savory breakfast is a bit of a trend right now. Is it really effective?
It is linked to the idea of ”body sugaring”, which means that the less sweets I eat, the fewer cravings I have and the more I resist in the morning. And when you eat too much sugar, an alert goes off that produces insulin spikes. It is quite a popular idea at the moment, effective for those who love salty food.
Sport is also an important ally…
Yes, and if you don’t like sports, then you have to walk, getting off, for example, before a bus stop. To combat a sedentary lifestyle, it is always advisable to take 6,000 steps a day. It’s quite easy, with a pedometer on your phone.
