Feyenoord’s chairman of the board Toon van Bodegom has been ‘whistled back’ internally for his statements about potential American investors in the club, Emile Schelvis claims on Sunday evening at Rondo. Claimed two weeks ago The Telegraph that three investment companies from the United States would be prepared to provide Feyenoord with a financial injection.
The newspaper was told by Mike Forde, who works for several large investors in New York, that there is serious interest in Feyenoord on the other side of the ocean. A day later, club watcher Martijn Krabbendam said of Football International at talk show Veronica Inside that the management was not aware of discussions with American investors and that the message therefore had to come from Van Bodegom. Haddock takes it one step further by stating on Sunday evening that the investors simply ‘are not there’.
“Toon van Bodegom was whistled back by people within Feyenoord this week: they think he should stop spreading these kinds of messages via The Telegraph. Those American investors do not exist, “said the analyst.” They are not interested in Feyenoord. Haddock points out that Feyenoord could use the money well. According to him, the club should decide in the next three weeks about the feasibility of a new stadium He would consider it a ‘historical mistake’ if Feyenoord goes for a completely new Kuip.
The new stadium should cost 444 million, but the financing is not yet complete. Before the final business case, or the feasibility study, can be presented, a few hurdles still need to be overcome. Moreover, it is unclear to what extent the club Feyenoord benefits from the new stadium: the management has requested a guarantee of at least 25 million euros in income per year. It is not yet clear whether this will be achieved; Alderman Arjan van Gils, who is in charge of the stadium file, cannot and will not give the guarantee.
“The stadium is technically bankrupt and is being maintained by the municipality in collaboration with Goldman Sachs,” says Schelvis. “Three weeks ago, Jan Boskamp told me that rat catchers walked around because the maintenance was so bad. It hurts my heart in Rotterdam. The club also has no money to spend; it is not for nothing that Feyenoord negotiates with players of the level of Mark Diemers and Bryan Linssen. There is no money and now they have to say ‘yes’ to a new stadium of 444 million euros? “
