Cross-country skier Emil Iversen has his partner Bettina Burud with him in the cheering group for this weekend’s cross-country skiing opening at Beitostølen. The couple became cohabitants in Trondheim recently, a life the cross-country skier really enjoys. Iversen lost his place in the national team earlier this year, but is aiming for the WC in Trondheim in 2025. Show more

Emil Iversen invited the press to visit a rented cabin on Beitostølen on Wednesday evening. He was sitting in the easy chair, rocking and smiling.

– I was angry, cursed and tired. It was a black day, says Emil Iversen to VG.

Because he went straight into the quarter-finals of the Finnish cross-country opening last week. He was in close contact with one of the national team runners who tested positive for covid after the prologue. There was panic and runners were tested before the quarter-finals, and there were even more positive tests.

There was some black paint. Then he went home to a new apartment in Trondheim and his partner Bettina Burud. Then life was good again.

Because he feels he is in good shape. He is ready to attack, with his girlfriend as an important person in the cheering group.

– What do you think when you read in the media that Emil Iversen is in love with a billionaire?

– That’s how the media are. I know what kind of lady she is. It is perhaps easy for people to think things when they read like that, but she is very nice, a proper and good lady. Then the headlines can be as they are, replies Iversen.

And while the press were visiting the cabin on Beitostølen, the girlfriend came in the door with several green bags in her hands. Bettina Burud is a Kiwi heiress and the daughter of former Kiwi owner Per-Erik Burud, who died in a boating accident in 2011, aged 48.

They kept their relationship hidden from the public for two and a half years. But “everyone” knew they were a couple. He thinks it was good to keep it out of column space in the newspapers. But in July he confirmed the relationship in VG and on social media.

The 32-year-old from Meråker has become a cohabitant for the first time. He has barely tested the new life with a shared flat in Trondheim. He has spent two or three nights at home in his new residence.

– It is exciting. If there won’t be so much World Cup this winter, I’m looking forward to being at home at least, says Iversen to VG.

He became world champion in the five-thousand after a bit of fumbling when Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was beaten in Oberstdorf in 2021. After that, things got tough. He lost his national team place this spring. Now he is aiming for the WC in Trondheim in 2025 with his own plan and is satisfied with that.

– What is your strength as a partner?

– Washing the kitchen counter, washing clothes and contributing with a good mood. I am extremely good with the cloth. I am perhaps Norway’s best boy with a cloth on the bench, replies Iversen and laughs.

It was the boyfriend’s idea to move to Trondheim with a view to the WC on home soil.

– I get maximum support to bet, but I don’t take it for granted that it will be Trondheim forever and ever, I will take the years I get here. I live in the present, says Iversen.

– What can we expect from you during the national cross-country opening?

– Nothing, replies Iversen and laughs heartily.

There is a sprint at Beitostølen on Friday and a distance race on Saturday and Sunday.
