New York/Leipzig – Emil Forsberg made his first major appearance for his new club New York Red Bulls. The 32-year-old Swede, who moved from Leipzig to the USA in the winter within the Red Bull football universe, shot his team to victory in their first home game yesterday.
Ex-RB professional Forsberg: “An incredible feeling”
In the 2-1 win against FC Dallas, he scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 (30th) and set up the second goal for his strike partner Lewis Morgan (54th). The next goal for Dallas by Jesus Ferreira (59th) did not change the final result.
“An incredible feeling, a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” said the playmaker after the final whistle. For the New Yorkers, coached by Sandro Schwarz, it was the second win in the third game. This means the club is level on points with Inter Miami and its superstar Lionel Messi (36) and the Columbus Crew in second place in the Eastern Conference.
Ex-RB professional Forsberg continued: “We still have a few steps to go. But it was still a very important victory because the circumstances were not easy.” Especially because it was raining heavily. Many roads were closed and rail connections were canceled.
Captain and oldest player on the team
The Swede left RB Leipzig in the winter after nine seasons. Not an easy step for the veteran, but his change is slowly paying off. The 32-year-old had previously played 325 games for the Saxons and led them from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League.
After a record season with 30 points in 30 league games, he was on the list of numerous top clubs in Europe in 2017, but ultimately stayed until 2023.
Before the season, Forsberg was elected captain of the New York Red Bull branch. The decision did not come as a surprise, as the Swedish international is by far the oldest outfield player in the squad, followed by Jamaican Cory Burke (two months older), followed by Sean Nealis at 27.
Above all, Forsberg has the most experience. The former top player from RB Leipzig is something like the nestor of an extremely young team, which is on average less than 23 years old and is trained by German coach Sandro Schwarz. The sports director is former RB official Jochen Schneider.
