Emergency surgery sidelines Foden; Liverpool forced to play without him

Phil Foden will miss England’s European Championship qualifier against Ukraine tonight, and several of Manchester City’s matches in April, after falling ill and requiring surgery at the weekend.

Phil Foden will not be in Manchester City’s line-up against Liverpool next weekend, after he had to have surgery to remove his appendix at the weekend, reports The Times.

The attacker felt unwell after England’s training at Tottenham’s training ground on Saturday, and was examined by the doctors. Appendicitis was diagnosed, and the City player underwent surgery on Sunday.

This means that the 22-year-old will have to sit out several of Manchester City’s matches in April. He must definitely sit out the game against Liverpool at the Etihad on Saturday 1 April, and the away game against relegation-threatened Southampton on the Easter weekend.

After this, Pep Guardiola’s team will play the quarter-finals in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, who have just hired former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel as a replacement for Julian Nagelsmann. The first match against Bayern will be played at the Etihad on 11 April, with the second leg in Munich a week later.

FELT UNWELL: Phil Foden had to be operated on for appendicitis on Sunday, and must spend two to four weeks on the sidelines.

Two to four weeks on the sidelines

It normally takes two to four weeks to get back to the hooks after an appendectomy, and for Foden the appendicitis came at a particularly unfavorable time, when he was in the process of finding his top form again after a foot injury.

This is bad news for Guardiola, who still does not know if the Premier League’s top scorer, Erling Braut Haaland, is fit to play against Liverpool following a groin injury the winger suffered in the cup match against Burnley earlier this month.

Foden was a substitute for England in Thursday’s 2-1 win over Italy in Naples, but he was replaced again when Luke Shaw was sent off.
