Emergency Steam Pipe Rupture in Midtown East Manhattan: Street Closures and Shelter-in-Place Order

The rupture of a steam pipe in Midtown East, Manhattan, caused authorities to close vehicular access to some streets and order some residents to stay inside their apartments.

The situation occurred around 2:00 in the morning, when a leak began between East 52nd Street and 2nd Avenue, the Department of Emergency Management reported. However, the situation worsened until the pipe was repaired before 7:00 in the morning.

Officer Philip Rivera, head of transportation for the NYPD, told via X which streets were closed during the emergency.

“1st Avenue, northbound to Lexington Avenue, from East 51st Street to East 54th Street, and 2nd Avenue, southbound, between 53rd and 51st Streets,” he wrote.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) also responded to the scene and asked nearby residents to shelter in place in their apartments and close their windows due to the vapor leak.

“The most important thing we are working on now is that they are doing some air quality tests,” Zach Iscol, Commissioner of Emergency Management, told local media.

During the morning, Con Edison was checking for asbestos in the air. “We have a possible release of asbestos, but we are working closely with other agencies to ensure the safety of the public and our employees,” the vice president of operations said in a hearing.

No injuries were reported during the emergency.
