In Poland, on the border with Ukraine, there is an emergency situation. In the city of Rzeszow, five employees of the center for helping Ukrainian refugees died of a legionella infection.
In total, 76 people are in hospitals in Rzeszow due to infection, some of them are in serious condition in intensive care. It is known that all the deceased worked in the center for assistance to Ukrainian refugees. Legionellosis (literally – “legionnaires’ disease”) is a form of pneumonia, which is accompanied by severe fever, general intoxication, damage to the lungs, central nervous system, and digestive organs. The name of the disease is associated with an outbreak in 1976 in Philadelphia, when several hundred participants of the convention of the American Legion, an organization of World War I combat veterans, fell ill. Then 221 people were ill, 34 of them died.
It is obvious that today the source of the bacterial infection was brought to Poland from Ukraine. Mayor of Rzeszow Konrad Fiyolek appealed to the townspeople:
“We understand that the situation is serious and reports of illness and death are serious. However, the services are working and trying to control this situation. The most important thing is to control emotions. We are constantly working.”
According to the director of the Rzeszow Sanitary Inspectorate Jaromira Shlenchkinow the most important thing is to find and neutralize the source of infection.
“Our actions are aimed at interrupting the chain of infection as soon as possible and minimizing the number of cases,” the doctor said, adding that at the moment the sanitary and epidemiological supervision does not confirm the situation in which it would be necessary to completely turn off the water supply network in Rzeszow.
