Emergency services continue to battle wildfires in California

As of Sunday afternoon (local time), nearly a third of the so-called “Mountain Fire” fire was contained, as reported by the fire protection authority Calfire. More than 2,800 firefighters continued to battle the blaze, Ventura County authorities said on X. More residents could have returned to their homes on Sunday.

“I know we suffered significant damage, but thousands of homes and hundreds of lives were saved,” Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said at the town hall meeting. “We have suffered losses, but rebuilding is possible.”

83 square kilometers burned

The “Mountain Fire” broke out on Wednesday near the city of Camarillo, northwest of Los Angeles. It destroyed at least 168 houses and other buildings and damaged nearly 70 others. More than 83 square kilometers of land have so far been affected by the flames. Forest and brush fires happen again and again in southern California.

Dryness and strong winds have also fueled forest fires along the US East Coast, including the states of New York and New Jersey. An 18-year-old firefighter died Saturday while fighting a fire north of New York City, police said.

No rain for weeks

A drought warning is currently in effect for parts of states such as New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It didn’t rain for several weeks. At the weekend there were even fires in the city of New York, including in Prospect Park in the Brooklyn area. According to the New York Times, the fire department was able to extinguish the fire within a few hours and there were no injuries. In addition, as a result of the fires in New Jersey there was a haze of smoke throughout the city. The US weather service announced some rain at the start of the week.

As a result of climate change, experts warn that forest fires are becoming more frequent and more destructive.
