Emergency iGPU in Ryzen 7000 overclocked to 3.1 GHz, how does it perform?

New processors Ryzen 7000 they have an integrated GPU in all cases, even in the case of classic CPUs (iGPU is no longer reserved only for APUs). A well-known overclocker addressed the capabilities of these graphics chips in the last video Tax benches. He also explained the difference between a CPU with an iGPU and an APU. While APUs have everything in one big chip, in Ryzen 7000s the processor is divided into one or two CCDs depending on the number of cores and the integrated GPU is part of the I/O chiplet.

Although the emergency GPU in these processors has RDNA 2 architecture, it is not really intended for playing 3D games. It is a graphics chip for basic display, which can be useful, for example, when you have problems with a classic graphics card, or when you don’t really play and you only need basic functionality and displaying the user interface of the operating system. This GPU has only 2 CUs (for the record, the weakest desktop Radeon RX 6400 only has 12 CUs and the Ryzen 5 5600G, for example, has 7). The GPU has a relatively high clock speed of 2200 MHz, but it’s really not much for gaming. Skatterbencher used a Ryzen 9 7900 with this graphics for the test and, for example, Tomb Raider in 1080p only ran at 12 fps, and CS:GO at less than 58 fps.

When activating PBO2+EXPO, the performance increased slightly, in the aforementioned games to 13 or 61 fps, which is still not much. On average, graphics performance increased by about 4%. He managed to manually overclock the GPU in the BIOS up to a frequency of 2975 MHz with a voltage of 1.25 V. He also noticed that from 2600 MHz the GPU voltage no longer increases. Tomb Raider has already managed to run at 16 fps, CS:GO at 77 fps. The average increase was a very respectable 26%, the maximum was +36% in Fluidmark.

Overclocker then tried one more thing, the GFX Curve Optimizer. This allowed him to increase the voltage, going up to 1.4 V. In this case, he was able to go up to 3100 MHz. That’s 900 MHz higher clock speed than the standard, i.e. 41% more, the maximum performance gain exceeded 40%. In Tomb Raider, the system already ran at 17 fps (still basically unplayable), CS:GO jumped to almost 80 fps. On average, the performance increased by 29% (if we did not count the benchmarks that were “stuck” at the same value regardless of further increasing the clock rate, we would be talking about about 35%). The interesting thing is that, according to him, the integrated GPU is clocked more easily than dedicated graphics cards. You can get more information in the video above.
