In the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, the emergency department was evacuated after a water pipe burst. The fire department has since closed the leak, but the department will remain closed for the time being. This means that no new patients can be received temporarily. The operating rooms are also closed.

A spokesman for the hospital said the leak occurred on the floor above the emergency room just after midnight. From there the water came down.

Eleven patients were treated at the emergency department at that time. One of them was allowed to go home, the other ten were taken care of elsewhere in the hospital. New patients have to divert to nearby hospitals. Ambulances have been notified.

Open again next morning

The fire brigade came en masse to seal the leak and to get rid of the leaked water. Just after 2 a.m., the leak was “squeezed off”, says the hospital spokesperson.

She expects the operating rooms to reopen by 8 a.m. The emergency department is planned to reopen shortly afterwards.
