The parties in the House of Representatives return a day after the start of the election recess. A vote must be taken on whether there will be an emergency debate on the war between Israel and Hamas.
SP and D66 announced on Saturday that they wanted an emergency debate on the situation in Gaza. They also want an explanation why the Netherlands abstained from voting on a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Because the parties are joining their request, the House of Representatives must return from recess to vote on the request. The House went into recess on Thursday. That will last until the elections on November 22.
Many parliamentary factions have already expressed strong criticism of the Netherlands’ abstention from voting. This was done by, among others, GroenLinks-PvdA, Party for the Animals and Volt. For the time being, the cabinet only receives support from the VVD.
Israel carried out the heaviest bombing of Gaza so far last night. It also sent armed forces into the area. They still haven’t withdrawn. Making contact with people in the area is virtually impossible.
