While the classic World Blood Donor Day will take place on June 14, the EFS is launching an emergency appeal: blood collections have fallen by 10% in Rhône-Alpes-Auvergne, with less than 85,000 bags, reserves are now too low, especially for blood groups O and B.

“With the covid, then the many public holidays in May, but also the deconfinement ” notes the French Blood Establishment “the attendance of collections has fallen and makes the current situation fragile”
This decrease is -10% in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Of the 10,000 donations needed per day to “keep the stock afloat”, 1,400 donations are made in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
At present, there is an emergency. With less than 85,000 bags, blood reserves are now too low, especially for blood groups O and B.
Donors are called upon to mobilize massively to donate blood now to enable the EFS to provide healthcare establishments with the blood products they need to treat patients.
Most collection points offer donation by appointment to reduce waiting times and better manage the care of each donor while respecting distancing measures.
All blood groups are tested, although there is currently a particularly shortage of groups O and B.
Blood donation and covid
All precautionary measures are implemented on blood drives to avoid the risk of transmission of the virus with the wearing of a mask compulsory for all, accompanied by measures of distancing and reinforced hygiene.
People who have shown symptoms of covid should wait 14 days after symptoms disappear to donate blood.
It is possible to donate blood after an injection of the Covid-19 vaccine, without any postponement period to be observed.
Operation “#Take the baton, 1 month to Give All!”
On the occasion of the JMDS, the EFS renews for the third year, the operation #Take the baton, 1 month for All to give! .
All citizens are invited to become ambassadors for blood donation to those around them from June 9 to July 9, 2021 to encourage them to donate blood in turn.
The objective: to set up a large chain of collective solidarity. “The results of previous years have been rather positive, “ indicates the ESF, and “occurs at key dates when the summer period leads to a drop in attendance due to departures on vacation“.
