Emergency Braking Techniques: What to do when your brake pedal stalls or fails

If during braking the brake pedal stalls (most often this happens due to uneven wear or destruction of the brake pads) or fails (most often due to air entering through leaky cylinder seals) and rests on the floor, there is no need to perceive this situation as a universal apocalypse, they say experienced drivers.

So, if the car is manual, then you can try engine braking: gradually lower the gears one after another, pressing the clutch pedal for a minimum time so that the connection between the engine and the gearbox is not lost. When downshifting, the tachometer needle should not enter the red zone. You need to be careful as the car may skid.

In the case of an automatic transmission, you need to switch to manual mode and gradually reduce the speed, as with a manual transmission. If this is not possible, then you should move the lever from position “D” to position “1” (range limitation) or put it in first gear, then the mechanism itself will make a reduction.

In addition, the car can be stopped using contact braking. This can be done by driving to the side of the road or rubbing against the curb. This maneuver must be performed at low speed and very carefully.

You can also use the handbrake for emergency braking. You need to turn it on carefully and release it when the wheels are locked so that the car does not skid.
