Aachen. The children’s ministry ‘Die Sternsinger’ is deeply concerned about the nationwide violent riots in Colombia and is providing 50,000 euros for emergency aid. Large cities like Cali, Medellín and Bogotá in particular have been in a state of emergency since the protests began. The emergency aid measures that have now been started are aimed at around 220 children and their families in Cali in the west of the country. The local partner of the children’s ministry organization, the Archdiocese of Cali, has set up a humanitarian commission to ensure the safe distribution of food and hygiene products such as soap, mouth and nose protection and disinfectants and at the same time to contribute to a solution to the conflict through dialogue .
“Closed hospitals and shops, looted supermarkets and gas stations, destroyed buildings and blocked access roads mean that the supply of food, medicines and corona vaccines is currently at risk,” says Monika Stockheim, Colombia country officer at the Children’s Mission. “Many parents are currently unable to work and support their families because of the ongoing protests and blocked roads. The situation on the streets of Cali is particularly dangerous for children and young people. Because of a lack of prospects and hunger, they easily become victims of forced recruitment by illegal, armed groups, ”warns Stockheim.
Since the end of April there have been repeated violent demonstrations in Colombia, which have already resulted in numerous injuries and deaths. The police and the military are taking action against the demonstrators with great severity. In the course of the protests, hundreds of people are also missing. The trigger for the initially peaceful demonstrations, mainly young people, was a tax reform planned by the government, which would have hit the low-income population in particular. In addition to the violent riots, the corona pandemic has hit the South American country hard, the health system is overloaded and many people are unemployed.

More than 1,600 projects for children in need around the world are supported annually by the children’s mission organization ‘Die Sternsinger’. Income totaling around 79 million euros was available for the charity of the carol singers 2019 for its work. Projects in 108 countries were funded.
