Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The rescue of a woman who was supposed to have fallen into the Dreisam overflowing bank has turned out to be less dramatic than initially assumed. A young woman only got no further with her bike on the riverside path in Freiburg because of the flooding and got to safety with the help of a man, said a police officer on Saturday.

Initially, a dangerous situation was assumed. A witness had reported to the police on Friday morning that a woman was holding on to a wall in the river. Thereupon several fire brigades, the police, rescue divers and the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG) moved out. But the search was unsuccessful, even with a helicopter. According to the police, another witness came forward in the afternoon. She said she saw a man pull a young woman out of the water shortly before the officers were deployed.

“There was never a woman in the river,” said the official. There was never a life-threatening danger. Transmission errors between witnesses and police made the situation appear more threatening than it actually was.
