The term JRPG can be a bit controversial, depending on which gaming scene you find yourself in. Some might take this to mean that Japanese RPGs should be classified differently from role-playing games designed by other developers. However, the creators of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry think the term is a good thing.

Whether or not you agree with the term, it’s clear that a game being a JRPG doesn’t hurt how many sales it can get because, as Kamiya highlighted, many incredible franchises come from Japanese developers.
