The ’17th Gapyeong Jaraseom National Marathon’ was held on the 20th in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, where beautiful mountains and the Bukhangang River come together.
In this competition, which was co-hosted by Segye Ilbo and Gapyeong-gun and organized by the Korea Marathon Federation and the Gapyeong-gun Athletics Federation, more than 8,000 people including amateur marathoners, clubs, families, students, and military personnel from all over the country participated and ran a powerful race while enjoying the autumn atmosphere.

Following the opening ceremony held at Gapyeong Sports Complex at 7:55 a.m. on this day, participants started in the following order: half course, 10 km, and 4.2195 km. The atmosphere of the competition was heightened by the emcee’s delicious lucky draw and warm-up exercises held before the start of the game.
At the opening ceremony, Gapyeong County Governor Park No-geuk, Gapyeong-gun Sports Council Chairman Ji Young-ki, Gapyeong-gun Council Chairman Kim Gyeong-soo, Segye Ilbo External Cooperation Director Lee Jae-ho, etc. attended and encouraged the athletes.
Segye Ilbo President Jeong Hee-taek said in his speech read by Director Lee, “The Gapyeong Jara Island National Marathon, which started in 2008 between Segye Ilbo and Gapyeong-gun to develop Gapyeong into a city of culture, tourism, and sports, has already reached its 17th anniversary.” We send generous encouragement and praise to the participants who overcome their limitations and challenge their goals through the marathon. “I hope that you will fully demonstrate the skills you have accumulated while enjoying the clean air of the Bukhangang Riverside and the beautiful, clean nature of Gapyeong with your whole body,” he said.

The participants of the competition departed Gapyeong Sports Complex at 8:30 a.m. on this day and ran along the waterside course that runs from the entrance to the Munhwa-ro overpass – Gapyeong Station – in front of Haengjagyo Bridge (10.65km turning point) – Bukhan River Road.

In the men’s half course, Bogan Kim, who participated for the second time from Seoul, won the championship trophy with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes and 49 seconds. Baek Ji-hoon and Joo In-seok, who participated as individuals, took second and third place, respectively. In the women’s half-course category, Jeong Seol-ah (Incheon Seo-gu Office), who participated for the second time since last year, won the championship with a time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and 39 seconds. In the men’s 10km course, Gwangyoung Baek, who won the half course last year, won with a time of 35 minutes and 2 seconds. In the women’s category, Kang Kyeong-ah, a track and field teacher at Gapyeong Middle School, took first place with a time of 36 minutes and 49 seconds. Jae-kyung Jang from Suwon won the 4.2195km men’s race with a time of 15 minutes and 18 seconds, and in the women’s category, Do Yeon-ju from the Gapyeong Youth Culture House won the championship with a time of 19 minutes and 42 seconds.
The family run category, established for the first time this year, went to Team Ryan. Team Ryan leader, who participated from Guro-gu, Seoul, said, “This was the first time my family participated together, and the course was good, so we were able to enjoy it to the fullest.” He added, “I will participate next year as well.”
Following last year’s competition, the 4.2195km course, which is 1/10th of the half course and full course, was prepared to allow marathon beginners, including families, office workers, military, and students, to easily compete, and it received a great response. All participants in this competition were provided with a t-shirt, finisher’s medal, record certificate, drinks, vitamins, snacks, etc.
