Creative director of the shooter The Finals Gustav Tilleby from Embark Studios spoke about the creation The Finals. As it turned out, in the early stages, no one from his team wanted to develop an online shooter. But the studio was made up of Battlefield veterans, so all their thoughts ended up focusing on the familiar genre:
Let’s start with what we [изначально] We didn’t intend to make a shooter. Everyone was like, “No, we shouldn’t do this,” because we’ve done it before. We actually had regular game jams where everyone would pitch their ideas and stuff. I came up with several ideas, including “boring idea number one” and “boring idea number two”, both of which were shooters. I named them that because I didn’t think anyone would be interested in making them.
We just talked about it and said, “Maybe we should try it.” Then we decided that if we were going to make a shooter, it had to be unique; should be something that no one else does.
Personally, I love system games where control is placed in the hands of the player, and he can figure out how to solve any problems himself. It’s about providing players with a sandbox where they can be creative, experiment, and develop their own ways of playing. This was the guiding light that led to a long period of prototyping, testing, and trying to figure out how to make this formula work in practice.
As a result, the developers succeeded. In just two weeks after release, over 10 million people played the shooter.
The Finals is a competitive shooter in 3v3v3 or 3v3v3v3 format depending on the game mode. In each mode, the emphasis is on collecting money. The shooter from DICE veterans stands out from the rest due to its total destructibility.
The Finals available for free on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
