Only the United States of America and Israel in the world, with Moldova abstaining, voted against the latest UN resolution calling for the end of the embargo on Cuba. On October 30 this year, as happens every year Since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has voted by a large majority for the end of the economic blockade that the United States has imposed on the Caribbean island since 1962. The latest resolution is entitled “Need to end the economic, commercial embargo and financial sanctions imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” and is based on the report of Secretary General António Guterres.
THE TEXT, presented by Cuba, reaffirms among other principles “the sovereign equality of States, non-intervention and non-interference in their internal affairs and the freedom of international trade and navigation, as enshrined in numerous international legal instruments”, and invites all states to refrain from promulgating and applying laws and measures that contradict them, urging the repeal of such measures by those who still impose them” we read on the UN website. The resolution is not binding and will certainly not be taken into consideration by the US. The evidence of this vote is how the US-Israel axis is strong and cohesive and immediately looks at what is happening in the Middle East.
THE SURPRISE the largest, however, comes from Argentina. After months of positioning Milei alongside the USA and Israel, as well as attacks against the UN such as that of last September 24, when the president of Argentina declared, during the General Assembly, that the UN «claims to defend human rights but allows bloody dictatorships like those of Cuba and Venezuela to enter the Human Rights Council without the slightest reproach.” The choice of the Argentinian Diana Mondino to vote in continuity with what her country has done in the past cost her her place as foreign minister: a few hours after the vote an official statement from the presidency of the Argentine Republic was released where we read that Diana Mondino “resigned from the role of minister”. Confirming the news, Milei’s press office issued a statement explaining that Argentina “categorically opposes the Cuban dictatorship and will remain firm in promoting a foreign policy that condemns all regimes that perpetuate the violation of human rights and individual freedoms ”.
Almost a year after the start of his government, Milei continues to stumble between strikes, demonstrations of dissent and tensions within the majority. Anonymous Foreign Ministry sources said that the vote would come because it was not convenient for Argentina to take sides against Cuba, as the votes of the island and its allies would be needed in future claims against the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of Malvinas islands.
IT WOULD NOT was enough for Milei, who after demanding Mondino’s resignation appointed Gerardo Werthein, ambassador to Washington for Buenos Aires, as the new foreign minister. Werthein is 68 years old, part of one of Argentina’s richest families, and has already been president of the Argentine Olympic Committee between 2009 and 2021. He has therefore embarked on Milei’s political project. The Argentine president’s attempt is certainly to “recover” credibility with Washington and position himself while waiting for the result of the US elections next Tuesday.
