Emanuele Filiberto Defends Father Vittorio Emanuele’s Innocence in the Netflix Docu-series Controversy

Emanuele Filiberto unburdens himself in conjunction with the release of the Netflix TV series on the tragic episode of the death of Dirk Hamer which involved his father Vittorio Emanuele back in 1978. «I am forced, with pain, to return to events that, for many years, have been definitively clarified and delivered to truth and justice. I am forced to speak in the name of my Father because Vittorio Emanuele, an 86-year-old and suffering man, unfortunately, is no longer in the health conditions to be able to defend himself personally». Thus begins the long reflection that Emanuele Filiberto entrusts to a press release speaking on the controversies sparked by the release of the Netflix docu-series directed by Beatrice Borromeo “The Prince” on Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy and the death of Dirk Hamer, which occurred following a tragic accident on the island of Cavallo in 1978.

«I am forced to intervene because, now several months ago, my Father had the opportunity to talk about the terrible events of the Island of Cavallo in 1978 in which the young Dirk Hamer was tragically injured and which also marked the history of my family» explains Emanuele Filiberto. The scion of the House of Savoy recounts that his father agreed to speak in the film after being contacted by Beatrice Borromeo, who wrote to him: «I have reflected a lot on the story of your life in recent years, and I have begun to have the unpleasant sensation of not having been corrected, having faced it with too much partisanship, not having listened”. In front of the cameras, «my Father nurtured the hope of being able to contribute, perhaps among the last jobs of his life, to a complex journalistic project, to give voice to his own story and his own innocence, not only in the classrooms from which he has already had justice over thirty years ago, but addressing the general public directly», he explains, underlining that Vittorio Emanuele «opened his heart, his emotions and the doors of his home for entire days to a documentary production, precisely because he did not have and has nothing to hide. No lawyers were put in the way, there were no prepared questions, no agreed issues.” But the criticisms and comments resulting from the series didn’t go down well with Emanuele Filiberto: «The documentary is there: you can like it or not and I don’t want to go into the merits of this -he articulates- Whether you want to talk about this story, that’s one thing. Whether you want to exploit it is quite another matter. What is in no way acceptable and which prompts me to intervene with these lines is the outline of the declarations that accompanied the release of the film, with the squalid attempt to bend my Father’s innocence to the point of transforming it into guilt». And he attacks: «The acquittal sentences were not enough. Now that Vittorio Emanuele’s health no longer allows him to defend himself personally, he must simply be destroyed. With slander. What does it cost, so much? Vittorio Emanuele is now without a voice. But no. My Father’s defense will continue to find an echo in my words, because he will do it tooth and nail, without compromise ».

A defense, he assures, «which is by no means just that of a son. Because this is what the acquittal sentences say, this is what those ballistics reports say, this is the truth: Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy is innocent. I don’t accept that the promotion of a documentary becomes an opportunity to spread false news». Emanuele Filiberto retraces the procedural phases that led to his father’s acquittal: “Let’s stop talking about conspiracies and also stop criminalizing French justice: my Father’s innocence was established by the Paris Assizes Court now thirty years ago, which completely exonerated him », he sinks. «I don’t understand why even today some people continue to allow themselves to accuse one of the most important judicial bodies of a sovereign state, repeating that the culprit is Vittorio Emanuele, when 12 years of investigations – and ballistics – have unequivocally established with a definitive sentence the ‘exactly the opposite,’ he continues. The son of Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy then concludes: «Anyone who really wants to find peace and justice should look elsewhere and not continue to pursue my Father who has already paid enough for all of this. And I really want to stop here, because I have many things to say, also about the Hamer family. But I have too much respect for this whole dramatic story to push myself into this area. In these hours, we have already gone too far ».
