EMA representative: AstraZeneca should not be given to people over 60 years of age

To date, the EMA has identified the vaccine as suitable for all age groups, with covid-19 being at greater risk than any complications following vaccine administration.

Nevertheless, some countries, including Italy, stop giving AstraZenek to people under 60.

“In the context of the pandemic, we were of the opinion that the benefit of the vaccine is beneficial for all age groups,” Cavaleri said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa. At EMA, Cavaleri is responsible for her vaccination strategy.

However, the number of people with covid-19 is declining and it is known that the younger ones are at lower risk of complications. Cavaleri said it would be better to use mediator RNA vaccines, which do not contain any dead or weakened pathogens, but genetic information of the virus, which are products of Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna.

Asked whether national health authorities should avoid administering AstraZeneca to people over the age of 60, Cavaleri said, “Yes, and many countries like France and Germany are considering it because more mRNA vaccines are available.”
