‘Elvis’: Why wasn’t Harry Styles cast in the lead role?

“Elvis”, the new film from Warner Bros. Pictures, will explore the life and music of Elvis Presley, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century known as the King of Rock. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the filmmaker considered singer Harry Styles the protagonist of the feature, but ended up settling on Austin Butler.

When the name of the former member of One Direction was mentioned to embody Elvis, the hype around the artist flew away, fans even betting on his choice. In an interview with the Australian podcast Fitzy & Wippa, Luhrmann explained that what put pop stardom out of the picture was precisely that he was already “an icon”, something that interfered with the constructive essence of the film.

“Harry is a very talented actor. I would work on something with him, [mas] the real problem with Harry is that he is Harry Styles. He is already an icon. Harry and I had really gotten somewhere, I mean he was desperate to put on the costume and explore. He has a great mind and I have nothing but good things to say about Harry Styles.

In addition to Styles, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”) were also considered for the role, but both lost out to Butler, who received critical acclaim for his performance – being described as a “breakout actor” and with Oscar nomination predictions.

“Elvis” recently won a trailer over three minutes. Besides Butler, the cast will also include Tom Hanks, who will play Colonel Tom Parker, the artist’s famously enigmatic manager. The film is released in Brazilian theaters on July 14. Check out the trailer below!
