After two years of military service in West Germany, Elvis Presley was welcomed home.
When he returned home to the United States, King co-starred in the 1960 television special The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis.
The show was also the professional debut of the singer’s daughter, future music and film star Nancy Sinatra, who was sent to the airport on Frank’s behalf to welcome Elvis to her home in the United States.
She then performed a duet on the television special with her father You Make Me Feel So Young/Old. And later in the show, Elvis and Frank performed their own songs, Witchcraft and Love Me Tender, verse by verse.
Then, about seven years later, Nancy and The King reunited when they appeared together in Speedway in 1968, a film released today that celebrates 56 years.
This musical action film was filmed the year before, which was also when Sean Connery’s Bond theme, You Only Live Twice, was released. In Speedway, Elvis played NASCAR driver Steve Grayson opposite Nancy’s IRS agent, Susan Jacks. His character’s role includes looking after Steve, who owes $150,000 that must be paid off with future racing prize money.
Of course, this is an Elvis movie, which means that Nancy’s Susan falls in love with the King’s character. The film, originally planned to star Sonny and Cher, was the last time Frank’s daughter acted in a film. Nancy, now 83, has shared fond memories of her time on the Speedway set with Elvis, who died aged 42 in 1977.
Speaking to PEOPLE previously, she said: “I know he’s the funniest and possibly the worst person I know, both at the same time. It made me laugh out loud. And at the same time, he would call me late at night to talk about things like the ghetto and his concerns for the people in the ghetto. I don’t know if that’s surprising. People who follow his life are probably aware of his fragility.”
Nancy and Elvis did not date, but she admitted in the past that there was a “friendly courtship”. King married his only wife, Priscilla, on May 1, 1967, and filming began at the Speedway a few weeks later on June 26.
Elvis and his co-star were so close that he asked Nancy to throw a baby shower for Priscilla when she became pregnant during filming. And the following year, before Speedway was released, King’s only child, Lisa Marie Presley, was born, who tragically died last January at the age of 54.
