Sandra Vanaga is the mother of hockey goalkeeper Elvjas Merzlikina, and she started developing her artistic dream two years ago, still “during the covid”. As she herself admits, she was not a stranger to art either, but only now has she managed to turn to it fully. The artist plans to open her first personal exhibition with a performance on the ice during the Optibet Hockey League game between the “Prizma” and “Mogo/LSPA” teams. The exhibition will feature 20 works of art created in the impasto technique, where each stroke of the brush is not only visible, but seemingly tangible. Each work was created under the influence of the artist’s thoughts, emotions and feelings. The works are dominated by abstraction, melancholic mood, lightness and nature motifs.
The idea of a performance on ice is something that has not been seen in Europe, but it is probably natural in her life, just like the name given to the exhibition “Once again on ice”. Many years were spent on the ice with her son in training, watching hockey games, and it goes without saying that hockey in its essence does not know softness, but the works of art that inspired the artist are permeated by softness, the light, cool tones of winter. According to Sandra, another indication of the connection with ice is the thought and connection with Scandinavia – harsh, at the same time inspiring. “During the performance, we will listen to compositions that inspire me, give me energy, strength and the feeling to create”, says Sandra. “The music created in the folklore traditions of the Scandinavian peoples in an ancient language fascinates its listeners. I often listen to this music when I paint, so even during the interpretation of the performance, those present on the ice will be able to enjoy the glow of the art universe, its mystically charming melody, its rhythm, the coolness of the space and the energy of art.”
“I would very much like Elvis to be present at the opening of the exhibition, but this is not possible at the moment. The contract in the NHL gives him obligations to the club that must be fulfilled. I am grateful to Erik Miļunas, who once left a significant mark on Elvja’s career, as well as to the Volvo hall for the opportunity to organize this event and exhibit artworks,” said Sandra in a conversation with the Sportacentrs.com portal.
The performance dedicated to the opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in Square B of the “Volvo” hall.
The exhibition is freely available to visitors from 28.01. until 10.02., every day from 16.00 to 20.00, on the 2nd floor of the “Volvo” hall.
The exhibition will also be available during the hockey game, on the opening day of the exhibition. All the works exhibited at the exhibition will not only be visible, but they will also be available for purchase. “I invite visitors to the exhibition to take a look at my works. Maybe you too will see that one special painting that will appeal to you,” says Merzlikin’s mother.
Entry to the event and visiting the exhibition is free.
