“I still miss Freddie. He was a wonderful friend, full of love and life more than anyone I’ve ever met, and a great performer whose music has inspired and thrilled millions,” Elton John said in a statement read at the start of the auction.
“He was kind, generous and funny, and it’s tragic that AIDS took him from the world too soon,” added Elton John.
A door from Mercury’s London home, Garden Lodge, sold for £412,750 (€480,906), far exceeding its original estimate of between £15,000 and £25,000.
Other items sold at the auction included furniture, clothing, artwork and trinkets. Among the works of art sold were paintings by Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso that had decorated the Mercury House.
Sotheby’s said it was the biggest auction of relics from a cultural icon since 1988, when 2,000 lots sold for £4.8m at an auction of Elton John’s relics.
