When the sign was put up on the main office building on Friday, the local authorities of San Francisco started a survey among the citizens.

It was about whether the company X, formerly known as Twitter, owned by Elon Musk, had permission to mount the sign on the roof. Namely, special permits are required to mount or change signs on the city’s buildings and roofs, among other things for safety reasons, reports CBS News.

Over the weekend, the city also received several complaints from residents in the area who were disturbed at night by the sign’s bright lights. In total, the authorities received 24 complaints against the sign, report CNN.

– When I first thought it was lightning, I was confused. I went to my window and looked out, but I couldn’t see anything at all. I thought it was a police siren or something like that, says Patricia Wallinga, who lives opposite the X house, to CBS News.

When the building office went to check the sign on Monday, they were met by construction workers who dismantled it. The property owners will be forced to pay retroactive permit fees and additional fees to cover the government’s investigation, CNN reports.

Earlier in July, Elon Musk, who bought Twitter last year, announced that the company would change its name to X. In connection with the name change, the new logo was installed at the company’s office in San Francisco.
