Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Lately there has been more and more discussion about the issue diet Lose weight using diabetes medication. In fact, famous entrepreneur Elon Musk also mentioned taking diabetes medication to lose weight. So, does this drug have side effects?
The two diabetes drugs are Wegovy and Ozempic, which are increasingly sought after after they claim they can make you thin and treat obesity.
Elon Musk revealed he takes Wegovy to help him look slimmer. “Fast and wegovy,” Musk was quoted as saying New York Post recently.
Wegovy is an injectable prescription medication that adults with obesity or overweight problems use to help them lose weight. This medication should be used with a low-calorie eating plan and increased physical activity.
Doctors and the pharmaceutical company that produces the drug, Novo Nordisk from Denmark, also admit that demand for the drugs Wegovy and Ozempic has increased this year.
And non-diabetic patients seeking slimmer waistlines appears to be a factor driving the increase in demand.
“A year ago I wasn’t as interested. In the last six months, the number of people asking about Ozempic and how it works and whether they’re candidates has increased tremendously,” New York plastic surgeon Jennifer Levine told CBS MoneyWatch.
Endocrinologist Gregory Dodell, of Central Park Endocrinology, also said he has seen an increase in questions from patients about Ozempic.
He regularly prescribed it to type 2 diabetes patients, but was hesitant to use it for weight loss.
“It works while people are taking it, but once people stop, they will gain back two-thirds of the weight they lost, or even more, and sometimes the weight loss is so unstable that people have to stop or keep taking it,” he said.
Have side effects
Previous research has shown these drugs, called GLP-1 agonists, to be effective in helping people lose weight. However, like all drugs, GLP-1 agonists also have potential side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches.
New research from the University of British Columbia provides more evidence linking GLP-1 agonist use to an increased risk of serious digestive problems, including gastric paralysis, pancreatitis, and intestinal obstruction.
In a journal published in JAMA, researchers discovered the effects of GLP-1 on the gastrointestinal system after noticing someone in the emergency room experiencing significant unexplained nausea and vomiting.
“For the record, he had recently started Ozempic for weight loss,” explained Mohit Sodhi, a researcher and fourth-year medical student at the University of British Columbia and first author of the new study. Medical News Today.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia said the conditions in the study included one disorder not mentioned on the drugs’ warning labels: gastric paralysis, which slows or completely stops the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines.
Their study is the first large, population-level study to examine the risk of serious stomach conditions in non-diabetic patients, specifically those using GLP-1 for weight loss diets like Elon Musk.
