Elon Musks The Boring Company to build its own hyperloop system – IT Pro – News

This is very different from Tesla or SpaceX. Nobody doubted that you could build a good electric car. The problem is that it had always had a dusty image and therefore never got off the ground. Musk can give it a better image.
No one doubted that you could build a reusable rocket.

I don’t understand how you got here.

Just about all media was extremely negative and skeptical about both Tesla and SpaceX until very recently (a few years) ago. Mainly SpaceX I would almost say. Even Musk himself doubted whether it would be possible for both companies.

The success of both companies has much more to do with engineering than with image. There have been entire countries (including during the space race) that have invested many billions in trying to build reusable rockets. Never succeeded. There are several companies and countries that have tried it and still trying† None succeed, except SpaceX.

Has exactly 0.0 to do with image.

How many vacuum switches have already been built as prototypes?

How many reusable rockets were there for SpaceX? 0
How many reusable LEO rockets are there from parties other than SpaceX? 0

That whole list of engineering difficulties applied (and applies) similarly to everything that SpaceX and Tesla did and do. It had never worked out that way before.

Thunderf00t has achieved nothing compared to Elon Musk and his videos have already been completely taken down by several youtubers.

In addition, the concept is essentially a train in a vacuum tube. He claims that the costs will be lower than a train without a vacuum tube.
Every child understands that this is total nonsense. The thing will always be much more expensive due to the addition of that vacuum tube.

Just because you don’t get it doesn’t mean it’s bullshit. A “train” in a vacuum tube moves much more efficiently than a train in air. That’s the whole idea. A train in a vacuum tube can therefore carry its own energy carrier, so a train in a vacuum tube does not need the following very expensive things:
— Heavy foundation (I’m guessing) meters thick over the entire route and all the leveling that goes with it.
— Catenary and the thing on the roof of the train that makes contact with it
— Rails (conductors are needed, but they can be much smaller/flatter/lighter)
— Wheels (it floats, just need some light wheels for “landing”)
— Mechanical brakes
— Mechanical switches
— Continuous power source (can be used with batteries)
— Thick Diesel engines for when the catenary is missing or broken (electric trains also have diesel engines as backup) and everything that comes with it.
— Car washes (you don’t get that dirty in a vacuum)
— Many more very expensive train matters that I forget

Hyperloop can therefore use the cost of all that to produce relatively simple and light pieces of tube and a relatively simple “train” (in fact a longer version of a fat Tesla, but without wheels). I’m willing to believe that you might end up much cheaper than train track + trains for the same stretch of route.
