Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite is reportedly leaking low-frequency radio waves. This had an impact on radio astronomy.

The findings come from engineer Federico Di Vruno of the SKA Observatory and the International Astronomical Union. The SpaceX satellite is suspected to be leaking low waves, apart from the allocated downlink band.

The research team used the LOW Frequency ARray (LOFAR) in Europe. It is a network of about 20 thousand radio antennas in 52 locations used to observe the 68 satellites of the Starlink constellation.

The result, according to them, was an electromagnetic leak up there. Radiation detected between 110-188 Mhz from 47 satellites.

“The frequency range includes the protected band between 150.05 and 153 Mhz which is specifically allocated for radio astronomy by the International Telecommunications Union,” said astronomer at the Dutch Institute of Radio Astronomy ASTRON, Cees Bassa, quoted from Science AlertMonday (10/7/2023).

Science Alert reporting the leak appears to be accidental and not against any rules. This is because in space there is no regulation of electromagnetic interference as is done on Earth by the International Electrotechnical Commission which limits electrical devices.

The effect of the intervention was still too small. However, Science Alert noting more satellites in space will make things clear.

Thousands of satellites have indeed filled outer space since some time ago. SpaceX for example has placed 4,365 internet satellite units in Earth orbit.

Besides SpaceX, OneWeb also has more than 600 units. Amazon also has plans to launch thousands of satellites starting next year.

The research team has also contacted SpaceX. The goal is to find ways to reduce or eliminate Starlink satellite leaks.
