Internet service Starlink has been operating in the territory of Indonesia. It’s just that they don’t directly use their services end user.
Starlink is satellite Low Earth Orbit (LEO) belongs to the entrepreneur company Elon Musk. Starlink is widely used to provide access in areas that are difficult to reach by infrastructure on land, such as areas in Indonesia.
After receiving approval from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), Starlink has now provided internet access in Indonesian territory. Meanwhile, Telkom sat -subsidiary Telkom– become a Starlink partner in Indonesia.
Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) Muhammad Arif revealed internet service provider (ISP) who are members of APJII can take advantage Starlink as a network backhaul internet to its customers. This is inseparable from the signing of a memorandum of understanding between APJII and Telkomsat.
“This can open up opportunities to increase internet penetration in Indonesia, so that the government will later target to provide services broadband internet in all regions of Indonesia can be achieved soon,” said Arif.
APJII sees that there is still a lot of potential that can be worked on between APJII and Telkomsat members, especially for the enterprise segment. Opportunities for APJII members to provide services broadband for mining companies and offshore platforms is still very wide open.
“So that the collaboration between APJII and Telkomsat is to provide services backhaul become very strategic,” said Arif.
Meanwhile, Lukman Hakim Abd. Rauf as CEO of Telkomsat, said that the collaboration with Starlink is currently increasing capacity bandwidth Telkomsat increased very significantly.
With this enormous capacity, according to Lukman, Telkomsat is able to meet the needs of APJII members who need a network to backhaul.
“If APJII members need bandwidth for uplink, Telkomsat can fulfill it. Currently, the capacity owned by Telkomsat is very large and can meet any needs requested by APJII members,” said Lukman.
“Telkomsat will not sell bandwidth the end-user. Telkomsat’s target in providing services is to cellular operators and ISP companies. So we hope that Telkomsat can become an integral part of the business of APJII members in deploying telecommunication infrastructure in Indonesia,” he concluded.
