Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In the midst of the failing business performance of Tesla and Twitter, Elon Musk still remains as the richest person in the world. According to a Forbes report, Musk’s assets amount to US$ 227.1 billion or the equivalent of Rp. 3,568 trillion.
Not satisfied with dominating the list of the richest people on Earth, Musk has another ambition, namely colonizing Mars. This is being pursued through one of his companies, SpaceX.

The same company is also developing a space communications satellite project called Starlink. Currently, Starlink satellites have taken over space, according to reports CNBC International, quoted Monday (13/11/2023).
SpaceX launched the first batch of Starlink satellites in 2019. Its adoption has boomed since then. Now, Starlink has 2 million active users and is available in 60 countries.
In fact, in 2024, Starlink is also scheduled to enter Indonesia. Starlink satellites are able to deploy internet without relying on traditional telecommunications networks.
The company’s goal is to distribute internet networks globally, especially in remote areas where regular infrastructure is difficult to reach.
Starlink uses a network of thousands of satellites circling space to deliver internet to Earth. This network is named Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It is located about 342 miles above the Earth’s surface.
“Starlink’s growth is truly extraordinary. Satellite service providers usually only have 500,000 to 1 million customers in 10 years. Starlink has reached 2 million customers in just about 2 years,” said Euroconsult Senior Affiliate Consultant, Brent Prokosh.
Experts predict the global satellite services market, including for TV, radio and internet broadband, to be worth more than US$ 92 billion by 2022.
Starlink can take advantage of this opportunity by gaining a dominant market share. Apart from targeting the general public, Starlink also targets enterprises, for example in the maritime and aviation sectors.
“Starlink is the most important component for SpaceX’s business. Euroconsultant predicts that by the end of 2023, Starlink will contribute 40% of SpaceX’s total business. The total value could reach US$ 3 billion,” said Prokosh.
Starlink’s popularity is also supported by its application in disaster and conflict areas, which are prone to communication paralysis. For example, Starlink is a mainstay in Ukraine. Recently, Musk also said he would provide Starlink internet to Gaza.
