American billionaire Elon Musk spoke about his company, Neuralink, approaching implanting the first electronic chip in the brain, in a plan that opens the way for various uses.
Musk said, while attending the “Vivatech” technology conference in Paris, that “Neuralink” plans to implant the chip in the brain of a paraplegic or paraplegic patient later this year.
Musk did not specify how many patients will undergo microchip surgery or how long the operation will take.
Musk, who is CEO of Tesla electric cars, the social networking platform Twitter and Space X, said that one of the first targeted applications of chip implants is restoring sight and allowing movement of muscles. People who are unable to do so, and he said in previous statements, “Even if a person was never sighted, as if he was born blind, we believe that we can still restore his sight.”
Neuralink is developing brain chip connections that it says may give disabled patients the ability to move and communicate again, and the company has conducted animal experiments in the past few years.
The company confirmed last month that it had obtained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to conduct its first human clinical trial, a milestone for the startup at a time when it faces investigations in the United States over its method of animal experiments.
Experts told Reuters earlier that if Neuralink can prove its devices are safe for humans, it will take a few years, or possibly more than a decade, to get a license for commercial use.
