Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The first human to become a patient with the Neuralink brain implant, Elon Musk’s startup, has now fully recovered from the operation.

According to Elon Musk, the test patient can now control a computer mouse using only his thoughts, quoted from Reuters, Tuesday (20/2/2024).

“Progress is going well. The patient has fully recovered, with the neural effects we had anticipated,” Musk said via his personal X account.

“Patients are able to move the mouse on the screen just by using their thoughts,” he added.

Currently, Neuralink is trying to test how many clicks of the mouse button the patient can make with his mind. Neuralink did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters for details of the patient’s condition.

For your information, the firm successfully implanted a chip into the first human brain last month. The action was taken after Neuralink obtained permission for human trials in September 2023.

The Neuralink study uses robots to place a computer interface (BCI) into the human brain, precisely in the part that controls movement.

Neuralink’s goal so far is that humans whose brain chips are implanted can control cursors and keyboards using their minds.

Musk has big dreams for Neuralink. The billionaire said his startup was able to facilitate medical operations more quickly. Furthermore, the Neuralink program is also predicted to be useful for treating conditions such as obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia.

Neuralink, which was valued at US$ 5 billion last year, has repeatedly faced protests regarding its security protocols. Reuters reported last month that Neuralink was fined for violating US Department of Transportation rules regarding the movement of dangerous goods.
