Former Zip2 colleagues and former Vice President Jim Ambras reportedly said in a documentary that current Tesla CEO Elon Musk patrols the office at 9pm to see who is working overtime. By the time he saw that no one was actually doing it, it was already 9pm. But he blushed and looked very angry.
Zip2 provides online city navigation and guide information for newspapers. It was founded in 1995 as the “Global Link Information Network Company” and was acquired by Compaq Computer Company in 1999 to enhance the functionality of its AltaVista search engine, and its two founders, Elon Musk, earned $ 22 million and Kimbal Musk $ 15 million.
Branden Spikes, a systems engineer at Zip2, sees Musk as a different kind of person who works all night and sleeps directly at his desk. He also sees Musk as an “omniscient” person, and Musk himself thinks so.
Musk’s mother also claimed in the documentary that Musk enjoyed reading books all night as a child and had to help him change clothes while he slept.
Musk currently manages four companies and was named the most charismatic leader in the tech industry in 2019. But he said in a podcast from December 2021 that “you don’t have to be a leader just to be a leader, you want leaders who don’t want to be leaders themselves.”
