Elon Musk’s Federal Investigation for Embezzlement: The Truth Behind Tesla’s Legal Woes

Not too much time passes between one legal woe for Tesla and the next. The latest news to emerge concerns a federal investigation for embezzlement, and it is necessary to take a step back to recover the whole story.

About a year ago, Elon Musk’s office manager, Omead Afshar, was about to be fired over a suspicious order for some material. The order was for a “special glass” for a project known as Project 42, which we later discovered, through a Wall Street Journal report, to be a villa in Austin for Elon Musk himself.

Omead Afshar had therefore ended up working for SpaceX, saving his job, but the investigation by the American press still catalyzed a real federal investigation by the Department of Justice for potentially using the company’s resources for private purposes.

A public company, such as Tesla has been for several years, must disclose all transactions with related parties (such as Musk in this case) above $120,000, and it appears that the required glass was well above this figure.

It is practically certain that Musk would then have paid for the recovered material through Tesla, but once again his feeling that he is above the rules has given him other headaches to deal with (and probable penalties).
