Elon Musk warns of potential energy crisis by 2025 due to high electricity demand

Elon Musk expressed serious concerns about a possible energy crisis in the near future. According to his forecasts, as early as 2025 the world may face an unprecedented shortage of electricity, which will jeopardize the further development of such promising areas as electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Musk based his assumptions on the growing demand for electricity, driven by the rapid spread of “green” mobility and the active introduction of artificial intelligence technologies in various areas. According to him, existing energy capacities may not be sufficient to ensure uninterrupted power supply for all systems based on advanced developments.

Musk’s warning came at the Bosch Connected World conference, where the prospects for cooperation between Bosch and Microsoft in the creation of AI applications for the automotive industry were discussed. In addition to possible power shortages, the entrepreneur addressed the challenges faced by manufacturers during the COVID-19 pandemic, including shortages of semiconductors and step-down transformers.

Although Musk’s forecast raises some doubts, experts recognize the high energy intensity of industries related to artificial intelligence and electric vehicles. So, according to the economist’s calculations Alex de Vries, by 2027 there could be about 1.5 million AI servers operating worldwide, consuming about 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. In addition, water consumption for cooling data centers is expected to increase significantly.
