Elon Musk to unveil Tesla’s self-driving “Robotaxi” on August 8: Cancels plans for affordable electric car

Elon Musk announced last Friday on the X platform that Tesla will unveil its long-promised self-driving car, “Robotaxi,” on August 8.

The announcement came on the same day that Reuters reported that the company had canceled its plans to manufacture an affordable electric car in the $25,000 range.

According to the report, Musk told the company’s employees that instead of manufacturing an electric car for sale on a large scale, he wanted to focus entirely on a self-driving car that would surpass other existing cars.

Musk has long floated the possibility of manufacturing a self-driving Tesla car, even displaying a fully covered car during last year’s 2023 event, in which he revealed the company’s third major plan, according to “The Verge” website.

Years earlier, he predicted that Tesla owners would be able to make profits from their self-driving cars by sending them to deliver passengers as if they were a self-driving taxi service. This is called the “Tesla Network,” as stated in the second part of Musk’s master plan, in which he stated, “You will also be able to add your car to the shared Tesla fleet by simply pressing a key in the Tesla phone application, and it will generate income for you while you are at work or on vacation.” This greatly offsets the monthly cost of the loan or lease, and may sometimes exceed it.”

In general, Musk’s repeated claims that self-driving cars are “a year” or less away have become part of Tesla’s tradition. He is also creating an army of robots that operate with artificial intelligence to prove his point that the new technology has approached and does not depend on humans to carry out the tasks required of it.

But critics believe that it exaggerates the capabilities of this technology, and relying on self-driving in Tesla cars often leads to fatal results. There have already been hundreds of collisions involving Tesla cars using self-driving systems, causing dozens of deaths. The company is now facing several wrongful death lawsuits, and the US government is investigating the company’s claims about the effectiveness of self-driving in its cars.
