Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that his company would shut down if its cars were used to spy.
“It is a very strong motivation to keep confidential any information. If Tesla used cars to spy on China or anywhere in the world, we’ll shut down,Said Musk in the virtual framework of the China Development Forum.
Sources told Reuters on Friday that the Chinese military had banned Tesla cars from entering its complexes, citing security concerns raised by the cameras installed on the vehicles.
These restrictions come as top Chinese and US diplomats meet in Alaska, the first personal contacts since President Joe Biden arrived at the White House in January.
Musk called for greater mutual trust between the world’s two largest economies in his remarks at the China Development Forum, a high-level business meeting organized by a State Council foundation.
In China, the world’s largest car market and a key ground for electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla last year sold 147,445 vehicles, 30 percent of its global total. However, this year it faces more competition from internal rivals from Nio Inc. to Geely.
