“Elon Musk Removes Blue Tick from Twitter Profiles that Don’t Subscribe to Twitter Blue”

Elon Musk has removed the blue tick from profiles that are not willing to pay the $8 monthly subscription to Twitter Blue ($11 for mobile devices).

With few exceptions (such as the author Stephen King), seeing a blue tick today means that the owner of the profile is a subscriber to the service devised by Musk to obtain additional income and try to make the social network profitable.

It could also be that this account contracts advertising on the platform.

Several users have posted the image of an alleged email sent by the company in which it is explained that as of April 21 it is necessary to have a verified account to be able to advertise on the platform.

The text explains:

Building a better Twitter through verification

¡Hola!

Starting April 21, your @account must be checked or subscribe to Twitter Blue or verified organizations to continue running ads on Twitter. Business accounts that spend more than $1,000 per month already have gold popcorn or will soon, and at this time will continue to enjoy access to advertising without interruption.

This change aligns with Twitter’s broader verification strategy: raising the quality of content on Twitter and improving your experience as a user and advertiser. This approach also supports our ongoing efforts to reduce fraudulent accounts and bots.

Subscribing to any of these services means that you have been verified by Twitter as a real person and/or company.

Among other features, you will have a more visible organic presence and a wider range of creation tools. We’re excited to get you started and benefit from a superior Twitter experience.

The message has attracted attention and has been criticized by various users who argue that the policy is ridiculous and that far from helping, will further discourage advertisers from using Twitter as part of their campaigns.

So far in the ad account creation page Twitter is not talking about this change, so it could be a false rumor. Although after all that Elon Musk has done with his social network, we would not be surprised.
