Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Elon Musk said he agrees with predictions by world technology scientists that there will be around 1 billion humanoid robots on Earth in the next two decades.
Musk via X, formerly Twitter, agreed with predictions made by David Holz, founder of artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory Midjourney.
Holz said in a post that he estimates there will be 1 billion humanoid robots on Earth by 2040 and 100 billion robots (mostly aliens) throughout the solar system by 2060.
Musk responded to the tweet by saying, “it might be like that, as long as the foundations of civilization are stable.”
Tesla, one of the companies founded by Musk, has developed a prototype of a humanoid robot that the billionaire might consider contributing to achieving those lofty predictions from now on.
Tesla Optimus, also known as Tesla Bot, was first announced at the company’s AI Day in August 2021 when Musk said the company planned to build a prototype the following year. He mentioned robots at the time.
“I think robots have the potential to become more significant than the vehicle business over time,” he said at the time.
At an event in October 2022, Musk said he hopes to eventually make millions of Optimus robots, which are expected to be priced at US$20,000 per unit, although the robots’ capabilities are limited.
“There is still a lot of work to be done to perfect Optimus,” he said at the time.
“I think Optimus will be amazing in the next five or 10 years,”
In 2022, Musk said he hopes to bring the robot to market in 3 to 5 years. Once ready the robot will be a very capable machine.
He told Reuters that although the creation of humanoid robots is not directly in line with accelerating sustainable energy as Tesla’s main goal.
