When Elon Musk speaks there are always surprises. During an interview after receiving the Axel Springer Award, Tesla’s CEO said something that went around the net in a few moments. Musk claimed that he would be ready to discuss the possibility of merging Tesla with another automaker.
We certainly have no plans to launch a hostile takeover, but if someone comes up with a proposed merger with Tesla with good reason, we could start discussing it.
Musk did not go further and did not want to say if by chance there are already some discussions going on on this issue. The words of Tesla’s CEO obviously immediately caused discussion. But can we really think that Tesla could come to merge with another car manufacturer? The American brand operates only in the electric car sector and has no intention of taking over facilities related to the production of endothermic vehicles. Also, Tesla it moves like a startup, free from those complicated old-fashioned corporate structures that are slowing down its closest rivals.
Merging with another manufacturer would mean risking losing all the advantages that today allow it to run fast. It is therefore difficult to arrive at a similar scenario, at least as long as Tesla maintains the current advantage over its closest rivals in the electrification fields and electronics. But when it comes to Elon Musk, anything is possible.
Tesla, however, had previously collaborated directly with some car manufacturers such as Toyota and Mercedes. Both of these builders had also invested in the American company and then sold their shares. However, we are talking about several years ago when Elon Musk’s company was certainly not the current one.
