The world’s richest person, Tesla founder Elon Musk, lets his followers on Twitter decide how much ownership he should have in the electric car company Tesla. On Saturday, Musk suggested that he sell ten percent of the Tesla shares – and wanted to hear if Twitter followers supported him in this.
Regardless of whether there is a majority that says he will sell or a majority that he will not sell, Musk will abide by what the majority decides. He writes on Twitter.
For the time being, the majority say “sell”. The vote lasts until 9 pm on Sunday evening, Norwegian time.
“Coin toss to 25 billion”
“We are witnessing the Twitter masses decide the outcome of a coin toss to 25 billion,” wrote venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya in a tweet response to Musk’s proposal, according to the news agency Bloomberg.
That’s not entirely wrong. If Musk’s followers ask him to sell ten percent of the shares, it is equivalent to a sale of shares worth just over 21 billion dollars, measured by Friday’s share price, according to the news agency Bloomberg. This corresponds to around NOK 180 billion.

Musk states the ongoing discussion that wealthy people in the United States do not sell shares to avoid paying taxes. Musk himself writes on Twitter that he does not take out a salary or receive a bonus and that his only method of paying taxes is precisely by selling shares.
Three times as rich as Buffett
Even if the Twitter followers should vote for Musk to get rid of Tesla shares for 180 billion kroner, he still has shares left. Musk’s net worth recently exceeded $ 300 billion, according to Bloomberg’s billionaire index – over $ 2,500 billion.
The Tesla founder is no longer just the richest man in the world, but also the first to pass 300 billion in personal fortune. Musk has had a fortune growth of over $ 100 billion so far this year.
The electric car manufacturer from California has crossed the magic limit of 1000 billion dollars in market value. It happened after the car rental company Hertz announced that it would buy 100,000 Teslas.
Elon Musk is at the top of the list of the world’s richest people by an ever-increasing margin. Musk is now about three times as rich as investor legend Warren Buffett.(Terms)Copyright Dagens Næringsliv AS and / or our suppliers.
