Elon Musk is accused of plagiarizing the design of the movie I, Robot for a new Tesla product

Jakarta – Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been accused of plagiarizing designs from the legendary science fiction film, I, Robot. This accusation came directly from the director of the film, Alex Proyas, who expressed his complaint on social media X, Elon Musk’s platform.

On October 10, 2024, Elon Musk introduced a preview of Tesla’s latest autonomous vehicle prototypes, namely Cybercab and Robovan. Not to forget, there is also the new Tesla Optimus robot, which is designed to serve drinks and interact with people.

However, this introduction did not go smoothly. Tesla called the event ‘We, Robot’, referring to the collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov which was the inspiration for the film I, Robot.

But several netizens on social media quickly noticed the similarities in design between Tesla products and robots from the movie I, Robot, which is set in Chicago in 2035. The robot Optimus, which is a versatile humanoid, looking like the NS5 robot from the movie.

The Robotaxi autonomous taxi is also said to be similar in design to the Audi RSQ featured in the film. In fact, the Robovan, which is an autonomous passenger vehicle, is thought to be similar to the robotic delivery vehicles in the movie.

Seeing this similarity, Alex Proyas firmly posted a comment on X on October 13, 2024.

“Hey Elon, can I have my designs back?” he wrote in satire.

Alex Proyas reveals that his design team has been working hard to create unique visuals for the film. He also said that Elon Musk seemed to lack creativity in the design, which he believed was inspired by the movie.

The production designer of the film I, Robot, Patrick Tatopoulos, did not want to be left out. He shared images comparing designs from movies and Tesla products on Instagram with a humorous tone.

“Maybe it’s just me, or should I be honored that Elon was inspired in the design of I, My Robot?” he wrote.

Filmmaker Matt Granger, who once worked as Proyas’ assistant, made a very emotional comment.

“I would also like to offer a full ‘f*ck you’ of my finger to Elon and his lack of creativity,” he wrote in a strong tone.

Elon Musk has not yet responded to this issue.
