Elon Musk said that his company Neuralink, which created the brain chip, hopes to chip people in 2022.
The American entrepreneur has been a co-founder of the company since 2016. It has developed a chip that can be implanted in people’s brains in order to stimulate and record brain activity, Business Insider reports.
It is intended for medical purposes such as the treatment of serious spinal cord injuries and neurological diseases.
“Neuralink technology works very well in monkeys. We do a lot of testing and we just confirm that the device is very safe and reliable. In addition, it can be removed very easily,” Musk explained.
“We hope to have the first human chips in 2022. These will be patients with severe spinal cord injuries such as tetraplegics, quadriplegics. We are awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration,” he said. he.
Quadriplegia or tetraplegia is complete or partial paralysis of the arms and legs.
Musk said “Neuralink’s standards for implanting the device are significantly higher than what the agency requires.”
“Progress will accelerate when we have chips in people (it’s hard to have in-depth conversations with monkeys) next year,” he added on Twitter.
Musk suggested that Neuralink could start implanting its chips in humans for the first time. In February, the American entrepreneur said that chipping could start by the end of 2021. In 2019, he predicts that Neuralink hopes to start testing in humans by the end of 2020.
In April, Neuralink released a video of a monkey playing a video game using its chip.
In July, the company said it would focus its efforts on developing its technology so it could allow quadriplegics to control digital devices with their minds.
Neuralink is not the only company to develop such chips. In July, a 20-person biotechnology company called Synchron received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to begin testing on humans.
