German Chancellor Olaf Scholz turned his fire on Elon Musk, declaring that “his friendship with the extreme right endangers democracy in Europe”.
“He supports the far right everywhere in Europe – in the UK, in Germany, in many, many other countries – and that is something that is completely unacceptable,” Scholz told a news conference in Berlin.
“It endangers the democratic development of Europe, it endangers our community and it must be condemned,” he added.
Musk has sided with far-right figures around the world, including backing the far-right Alternative for Germany in the country’s upcoming early federal election, which is set for February 23, Politico points out.
Musk is also one of Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters and has earned a place in the US president-elect’s inner circle.
Scholtz said he is not opposed to Musk expressing his free speech, but: “His association with the far right, whether for business interests or for reasons related to his own political stance, is unacceptable.” .
The German chancellor’s comments are the latest in an ongoing row with Musk, who in turn has called Solz a “stupid” and claimed he will “lose” the German federal election.
